Clarification of TAC's Position on Crosswalk Flags

Admittedly TAC's initial response to Mayor Kelly left the reader with the understanding that not only did TAC not approve crosswalk flags as traffic control devices, but they appeared to have a number of concerns with their implementation.  In response, on behalf of Waverley Road Crosswalk Flags, Mike Savage, MP - Dartmouth-Cole Harbour spoke with Mr. Michel Gravel, Execturive Director, TAC.  From that discussion and subsequent letters TAC is actually neutral wtih respect to advice about crosswalk flags.  Mr. Gravel states:

  • "...did not support that addition to the national manual but it did not offer advice about the merits of crosswalk flags at particular sites in Halifax"
  • "...acknowledges that local conditions and local engineering expertise may require different tools and practices to be implemented locally"

Furthermore, when asked to provide evidence to support the claim of a 'false sense of security' none was provided.

The actual letters exchanged by MP Savage and Mr. Gravel are attached.
